Thing 19 Podcasts

http://www.internetsafetypodcast.com/

http://www.podcastdirectory.com/podcasts/archive.php?iid=10167 English Idioms and Slang

Not sure if I did this correctly, but I didn't really realize podcasts were out there. I do listen to a radio station from Texas occasionally, but realize now that I could listen to a particular show when I want to and don't have to be home to catch it live the way I have done on vacation.

My thinking on lower elementary students doing podcasts is that it is nothing but learning for them and entertainment for their parents. I can see that for professional development it would serve a large audience and guest speaker doesn't need to travel. I love the teacher notes concept. I haven't seen it truly used in person in an educational setting, but can only imagine what students could do with this. I think it would be a fun way for students to present projects and to view other projects. It would also be a fun way for schools to communicate with other schools and set up a "sister" type school in other states and other countries.

Thing 18

This was very easy to do. I looked through several before coming back to a page and had not seen the one I ended up using. Nice pictures and message so it wasn't too hard to decide. One of the things that has hit me over and over through this class is that there is a population of kids who cannot write or read well, but they are very smart and their gift is in the arts. I can see many students excel with photography or other art forms and getting their work out to the public which would never have happened before. I believe that this is a wonderful way for students to do presentations and not only share with the teacher, but students, family, staff, and the world!!

Thing 17 Online Productivity

Well, I am a person who has post it notes EVERYWHERE. I have two calendars within my visual space as I type at home. I have two calendars on my desk at school. I do not have a fancy cell phone to store anything or simply don't think I have that app. since it is a simple phone.

Between being a single mom of an active son, teacher with meetings, and scheduling activities and appointments I would venture that Remember the Milk and 30 Boxes will be two of my new best friends!! I have TRIED to carry something in my purse. I am forever having to wait until I get home to schedule something at work. I think the 30 Boxes will take care of that need and the Remember the Milk will get rid of post it notes I keep in my pockets, in the car next to my seat, or on my mirror..............

I am thinking I am loving that 30 boxes right now!!!!!! Plus, I think this would be a good thing to have at work. Instead of sending out paper calendars do it all online and update for the staff. Heading back to work Monday with lots of cool ideas!!

As a teacher, I already have a web site for current classwork/homework. Thinking I could do something differently and for no money involved!! :-)

Thing 16 Google Docs

My first initial thought was communication and less paperwork. I also was thinking this would be a great way for our in school suspension person to collect information/assignments for students visiting for that particular day. I am planning on bringing this up to my principal once we return to work. The lady in charge is always running around gathering information on her students. I would think this would help her immensely and possibly put a bit of pressure on teachers who tend to slack and not get their work to her for the offending student!!

One of the problems we have at our school is OPEN computer lab time. It is difficult for teachers to use the labs when they want to and we have many students without computers at home. I have seen such panicked looks on students faces when teachers bring up working on computers. I always hear about parents not allowing kids on "their" computer, no computer, computer not working, no internet, no printer, etc.... That's the one big struggle with working at home collaborating on an assignment. The email issue could also be problematic with parents who REFUSE for their child to have one. Not sure what you would do with that. One thing that was mentioned on the video was the teacher knowing who was doing the lion's share of the work. Wow!! There's a concept!!!! We all know there are kids who work and kids who watch!! Guess those days would be over for the watchers!!!! :-)

Wish I had had something like this when I was younger and had friends proof read and add their .02 to tpapers. I am trying to plan a vacation/potential cruise for next summer and was already thinking this would be a great way to get thoughts, suggestions, interest levels of anyone wanting to go within our family.

Thing 15

Well, nothing like taking advantage of a babysitter to play around on the computer all afternoon!!!! I realize more and more that I have so much to learn and so little free time. I keep seeing things I want to see and read, but can't due to time constraints.

This was not a difficult task, but time consuming for me at least.

A. News feed was fairly easy to do.
B. Tag feed-had to do a little differently, but I had read the comments of some folks in the class so had a bit of an open mind in case I ran across any issues. I did end up doing it by copy/paste method as that was the only thing I had a problem with and not a huge deal.
C. Cleaning up isn't hard to do at all. I need to add more rather than delete. Plus, the concept of moving things in and out of folders or deleting isn't a problem for me.

Thing 14

I had already created a Delicious account through another class I was taking. My account name is glorialadley. I do not have any mind boggling bookmarks, but was just starting to add and I do need to import the rest of mine when the time is available. I think it is a wonderful spot to keep things and I have to remember to make sure I mark private when needed! This was an easy assignment!! I was thinking I should probably create two accounts though. One for personal and one for work. I am bad about marking things private.....

Thing 13

Tagging basically describes what I needed a few years ago. I didn't realize it existed, nor thought to ask anyone because I have always felt I should know more than I do. So, embarrassment kept me from inquiring and probably finding out about it sooner. I think it has to be the ultimate time saver. I can never remember a thing so working on a computer at home and at work is worse when you can't remember sites you have kept on one computer, but are working on the other.

My only problem with the concept of tagging so far is that I really think I want it for my own personal use. I think I have to use it and investigate it more before I truly settle on an opinion. But, as far as education goes it could only organize and help when searching for something such as sites you have bookmarked for particular areas that you need to use. I imagine practice is the only way of working with this.

I have actually opened a Delicious account for another class, but haven't truly used it. Now if I can remember where I have it.....

Thing 12

I was nearly finished composing my thoughts when the power went out at my school. The kids had been dismissed so not a huge deal other than my work was lost!! Power was restored a minute or so later......

I am comfortable with the embedding code and now realize I added a widget before the assignment was given. I have learned to not be so afraid of just trying something since this is a machine and not a body!

I joined FB about a year ago after a niece introduced me to it. She told me it was addictive. Yes, it is. I think that people are too busy these days and it is a great way to stay in touch with friends and family. All of my family lives in other states or too far away so it is a great communication tool for me. I learned that FB draws people in with it's games that are readily available. I stopped doing those within a few days as I was not getting anything done. But, I do know several people that are very, very addicted to the games and it makes me kind of nervous to tell the truth. I keep wondering how they are taking care of their young children or chores at home.

I have several support groups online. I belong to several dealing with adopted children from China and for single moms who have adopted from China. I have become friends with and actually met up with single moms and we do activities together. I posted in a previous Thing about how I have emailed, talked, texted, shared pictures, and hopefully a face to face vacation with people I have met online. I tend to be outgoing and not shy so I am probably the same way with any online communication. I feel that my friendships online will remain even once we meet up in person. I would hope so at least!!

Teenagers go through so much simply because it is their age that hands them a lot of strange times in their lives. I DO worry about the My Space and Facebook sites for many kids because of their innocence and not realizing that what they put out there is out there forever. I worry that it gives them social boldness in ways that they would not behave that way if it was face to face. I have been STUNNED at pictures I have seen within my own family when it comes to younger nieces and nephews. I realized that they do NOT understand the permanency of pictures and words. However, I do believe that parents and guardians need to wise up and be aware of what their kids are doing. Parents don't realize what their kids are doing with cell phones. It's nothing more than a small computer and for some reason I feel parents think that cell phones aren't a big deal. My big concern and I know it is showing my age is the fact that kids do spend a lot of time socializing electronically rather than in person. It will be interesting to see how this works out in the future.

Thing 11

I have been posting comments on blogs for a long time. I have "met" some awesome people out there and it's amazing what happens. I have an adopted son. Through blogs/email I have become a godmother to a child I have never met. I have been able to take a vacation to Miami because of someone I have "met" online. Being a single parent has connected me to a community of others through blogs and I have received a lot of support. I have randomly stumbled upon blogs and will throw a comment in never expecting to hear back from that particular blogger. It opens up a new world that never existed for me just a few years ago. I just remembered when I first started posting comments that I would feel a bit offended if I never heard back. Some bloggers are busier than others and I realized it wasn't personal, just the way they operated. I learned about a mom who uploads everything to Blurb from her blog and publishes it in hardback form for her daughter. Very cool idea!!!

Thing 10 My favorite You Tube video so far!!!

This is easy to do. No issues. So far so good as far as using my work computer to do this.

Thing 9

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7EYAUazLI9k

So far my all time favorite you tube has to be the sound of music production in the train station. My son and I have probably watched it well over 100 times.I imagine that I am going to learn how to post it somewhere here pretty soon, but I did include the URL for it.

Thing 8

Well, this was too easy and too fun. Oh, I wish I had a job that afforded me to play all day!!! This is done from Big Huge Labs.

Thing 7

This was pretty easy to do. It's one of those sites that I need to really have time to look at because you can get carried away looking at photos!!!

Gosh, you should probably be able to use pictures in any classroom setting. What a fun way to travel around the world from your computer just by entering words! English/L.A. people would have a field day using pictures as story starters. My mind is kind of reeling with possibilities as I think of what other teachers could do with this site. Students could go on a vacation and share pictures with their teachers and maybe write about what they are doing in case they miss school. Art students could put portfolios together. There are endless writing opportunities with so many pictures available to students. I personally saw one photo that was kind of blurry that would have objectional content on it, but I imagine there are more. I would say that would be an obstacle with students. I don't think that younger people today realize the ramifications of posting inappropriate pictures in public that will potentially bite them in the behind down the road.

As a personal note I can see that this would be a wonderful site to share photos.

Thing 6

Thing 5

OMG. I didn't think I could ever finish this one. I didn't realize that I had been doing this using my "own method" if you will in my personal life. I have been using the orange RSS buttons for a while, but I like how I can set up and get new posts without going to my bookmark menu and finding them there. I also like how new posts work. I use Firefox so I had to clear out my brain clutter and relax since I was getting so frustrated. This took me the longest so far.....
